The Civil Defence was made up of those services that existed to respond to the threat of air raids and gas attacks. The Government felt every measures should be taken to reduce casualties from bombing raids. The organisation of Civil Defence began before war was declared and by 1939 there were 1.5 million men and women enlisted in the emergency service. Burnt Stubb is now part of Chessington World of Adventures.
