SHAEF was the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force. If you look closely in the foreground you can see the slit trenches that were dug later in the war when the V1 and V2 rockets started to attack Southern England.

Q. Why were slit trenches only dug when the V-1s started arriving

A. There was not much warning when a V1 rocket came over. Slit trenches allowed people to jump down into them and take cover quickly..
